SDGs and the Sustainable Mentality

SDGs and the Sustainable Mentality

“Sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

5th September 2017  - Design for Need, Sustainable Development Goals

By Finn Brownbill

Who has the boldness to set themselves a goal to “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”. Optimist, Pessimist, Realist, whatever mental attitude you possess, reading such an ambitious, idealistic goal may seem like nonsense. But why does it have to be? One could go one step further, look inward and ask themselves what is the meaning of life? To achieve the purest form of life for oneself may be just as ambitious and idealistic as eradicating global poverty. But should that stop us? Some believe the agenda pushed to achieve goals like this is too difficult, believing the goals are too unwieldy to implement/sell to the average person. Some argue there are too many goals altogether. One thing is for sure, its got people talking. It’s creating a proactive attitude towards making a difference and it has facilitated the creation of  social enterprises like ours, so that’s got to count for something. Goals such as the incredible goal to ‘End Poverty’, is one of 17 world changing goals, which collectively make up the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is what I will be talking to you about today.

5 Inspiring Social Design Projects

Social designs that innovate, intrigue and inspire.

31st August 2017 - Design for Need , Social Design, Projects

By Finn Brownbill

The field of social design and its products which spring to life from it, produce a wonderful array of fascination, empowerment and facilitation. To create a piece of equipment or even an idea, with the pure purpose of improving the well-being and livelihood of people in need, is some admirable feat to say the least. Creative designs are being drawn up every second of every day, many are quickly brushed aside, some forgotten and most end up in the bin. But some make it through the tough trials of applicability, realism and functionality. It is these impressive inventions, ticking all the boxes, of which I would like to bring to your attention. This article is compiled of social design projects which have blown us away, inspired us and need to be shared with you.

4) Introduction - How You Can Help

“By keeping an open-mind, we will in-turn open our arms to a thriving network of people and ideas that we unaware of beforehand.”

24th August 2017  - Introduction, Design for Need

By Finn Brownbill

By now you might have familiarized yourself the heart of Design for Need and how we go about making a difference, but now I think it’s time we get to know you. If you want to help us out in whatever means, from tagging along out of intrigue to offering collaborative support, we certainly welcome you to do so. To quote Caesar, “Apes alone weak… apes together strong”. Alright, alright so I quoted Caesar, the chimpanzee from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and not Julius Caesar, the historic figure, the but the sentiment remains nonetheless. Design for Need sees business, or at least our business, as a collaborative, non-competitive arena where there is plenty of work to go around. If we work together to achieve a common cause, we will be more efficient, more effective and closer to our vision of a world without poverty, global inequality and environmental injustice.

“Project work is the primary focus point of Design for Need, it’s our bread and butter”

17th August 2017  - Introduction, Design for Need, Projects

By Finn Brownbill

Welcome back to Design for Need’s Introductory series of articles. Last article I talked about who we were, focusing on our story, mission and values. In this article we’ll start to focus on the activities Design for Need focus on, most notably ‘Project Work’. Essentially, we’ve covered the heart and soul of the social enterprise, now let’s focus on the handywork of our arms. Before I get too deep into the personification analogy and start talking about what colour eyes Design for Need would have, let’s get on with it.
